Whitebark Pine Nut Collection – 7 Day Pack Trip

Whitebark Pine Nut Collection – 7 day Pack Trip

Whitebark Pine Nut Collection – Conservation Trip in September 2024. A unique experience to discover the wilderness, connect with nature and contribute to Conservation.

On this 7 day Pack Trip will you will be riding the mountain tops and your horse will bring you to places only the early pioneers have been to.

The Whitebark Pine is an endangered 5 needle species and only has cones every three years. To ensure this special species continues, it is important to conserve its habitat but also to collect the nuts to plant them in areas where the Whitebark Pine is endangered. The Whitebark Pine nuts are only ripe enough to harvest in September.

So join us on one of our two unique Conservation Horse Pack Trips in September:

On this unique Conservation Horse Pack Trip, you will help to collect and shell the cones to gather the nuts. You will learn about wildlife identification and behaviour and more about the unique subalpine ecosystem the Whitebark Pine is part of. As we collect the cones, observe Clark’s nutcracker, squirrels and grizzly bears do the same. Try the nuts raw or roast them over the campfire like the First Nations did. Spend your days riding your horse across the mountain tops and while you learn more about western mountain riding and horse care.

Why is the Whitebark Pine endangered?

Due to infestations such as white pine blister rust or mountain pine beetle and wildfires, whitebark pine populations have had a rapid decline in some areas of BC.

Why is it important to conserve the Whitebark Pine?

It grows in the subalpine and plays an essential role in this ecosystem. A large number of other plants and wildlife depend on it. For example, it retains snow and water on site for other plants to use. Its nuts are a major energy intake for birds, especially Clark’s nutcracker, squirrels, black and grizzly bears. The grizzly bears that eat Whitebark pine nuts can have up to 4 cubs in the next year.

How can the Whitebark Pine be conserved?

To ensure this special species continues, it is important to conserve its habitat but also to collect the nuts to plant them in areas where the Whitebark pine is endangered.
